Getting Around Melbourne
Airport
Melbourne Tullamarine airport is located 25km north of the city. For more information, visit www.melbourne-airport.com.au or call 03 9297 1600. A shuttle bus - Skybus - offers service from the airport to Melbourne city and operates 24/7 running every 10-15 minutes daily and every 30-60 minutes overnight. Tickets are A$15 and A$24 for a return. Skybus can also pick up and drop off at most hotels in the city between 7am-6:30pm. Call: (+61) 03 9335 2811 or visit www.skybus.com.au. Airport Taxis are available from the ground floor level outside all terminals. Expect to pay around A$35 to A$40 for the 25-minute trip into the centre of Melbourne.
Local Traffic
Trains cover the city centre and suburban areas with Flinders Street Station as the main hub and run from 5am to midnight. Trams cover the city and inner suburbs and run every 6-8 minutes but less frequently on late nights and weekends. Busses cover the whole city and suburbia.
A Metcard can be used on all services and can be bought in stations, in shops carrying the Met flag or online: www.metcard.com.au. A daily Metcard costs between A$6.10-12.60 depending on the zones.
There is a free City Tourist Shuttle and a free City Circle Tram both stopping at key tourist attractions and destinations in and around the city and runs daily from 10am-4pm every 15 minutes.
For those who enjoy a more environmental friendly way of seeing the city can jump on one of Melbourne's CityBikes, which carries two passengers. A one-hour sightseeing tour costs A$55 per vehicle. Call free on 1800 686069. You can also rent your own bike and take a tour along the Yarra River. You can also use the Yarra River as a means of transportation, where boat cruises, water taxis and even gondolas will take you on board.
Taxi
It's usually easy to find a cab in Melbourne. Start rate is A$2.80 and there is a surcharge of A$1 for late night rides, telephone bookings and for using the boot. Here are three of the main taxi companies:
