About University Of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne is the second oldest University in Australia, with it's main campus located in the Parkville district of the city. In the most recent Times Higher Education Ratings, the University of Melbourne was ranked at 36th in the world, and 1st out of all Australian universities. With over 7,000 staff members, the 35,000 students who attend the university are well supported. As a university, it is unmatched in the country, and it is also an exciting place to visit for travelers to Melbourne.

The architecture of the buildings within the University of Melbourne are varied and beautiful. Beginning in the late 19th century, the buildings were designed to imitate the great British Universities like Oxford and Cambridge. Many of these older buildings are grouped together in an arc at the north end of the campus, in an area commonly referred to as "College Crescent." Other buildings were quickly put up after World War II as an influx of students caused expansion for the school. There are also examples of Edwardian, monolithic modernistic, or even Victorian Baroque style architecture found around the campus.

The University of Melbourne boasts many theaters, libraries, and museums available for public use. Visitors will find these fascinating and are a great way to explore the school further. Visit the Ian Potter Museum of Art to view the visual arts collection belonging to the University, or the Melbourne Theatre Company to attend a performance or just to tour the stages on which they rehearse.

Most of the University's buildings are in Parkville, which is home to many beautiful Victorian buildings and carefully maintained trees. Walking from class to class is a pleasure with such beautiful surroundings! Nearby is the Royal Park, an inner city park boasting over 180 hectares of open space for sport, relaxation, and recreation. It is common to see students jogging or cycling around the park, or even flying kites on the hills when the weather is nice. Just next door is the Melbourne Zoo, home to over 320 species of animals. There really is much to see and do at the University of Melbourne and the surrounding areas.
